FRUGALITY from Q-BITS

Patchwork was born out of necessity and frugality using bits and pieces of old clothing and scraps to produce an item of warmth.  There are some wonderful books that document the history of quiltmaking from the beginning to our current large industry that supports the creative aspect of the fiber arts.  One of my favorites about the history is  "The American Quilt, a History of Cloth and Comfort  1750-1950" by Roderick Kiracofe.

My personal quilt history includes being raised by three households of women who had just emerged from the 1930's great depression and World War II, and were ...

Isolation Charity Sewing - Part 1 from Sew........This Is My Blog

During the Covid isolation I didn't just sit around doing nothing.  Well, actually I did for the first six or seven months.  Once I came out of my funk I did get into my sewing room.  I managed to make several charity quilts for Project Linus to be donated through my guild, the Rocket City Modern Quilt Guild.

First up are two super simple quilts I made from my stack of 5" brights.  I have so many children's prints, novelty prints, and brights that every once in a while I cut up a bunch of them into 5 ...

swept away from Making A Lather

I finished piecing the sea swept cornerstone blocks at Friday quilt group.

And then I had to trim them. I used the studio 180 squared squared to trim them.

And then I counted them - sigh, I am 6 short. hmm- maybe I had the steps backward. haha

But, they are beautiful and I am so pleased.

Sue is back to Friday group after covid. We have missed her.

and I gave Linda her quilt back after quilting it. It was a beauty.

I am linking:

progress from Making A Lather

This seems like a small accomplishment for my sea swept quilt, but, I have made a decision to cut new blocks for the sashings and trim down to the right size. These 2 blocks were made using the exact measurements. They are not bad but a little small. I need 56 of these blocks for the quilt I am making.

Our guild had an open sew and charity quilt workshop Saturday. I took my accuquilt and tumbler die for cutting through donation fabrics. Somehow my die was broken and we had to suspend the cutting. sigh... I've never had ...

Economy Block Finished from Wedding Dress Blue

It was fun to turn the scraps into a top.

But even more fun to turn the top into a finish. And use more of the prepared scrappy bindings Sparkle Jane and I created and set aside.

Even small finishes are so satisfying. This adds to my growing stack of baby quilts to be gifted or donated by the end of the year.

More babies needed!

Economy Block Baby Quilt from Wedding Dress Blue

Using THIS TUTORIAL and the the last of the leftover jelly roll scraps that created the coin quilts, I made this baby quilt top.

It was fun to add scraps to make it work. The light blue solid doesn’t show quite the right color here. It looks better in person.

Everything Old is New Again: EQ8 Design Inspiration From a Vintage Quilt from Cheeky Cognoscenti

Good morning!  Happy Passover to my Jewish friends, Happy Holy Week to my Christian friends, and Happy Spring to one and all!  In my house, my younger son has a half day of remote learning today and then he is off for a week of Spring break.  My older son is coming home from college tomorrow afternoon, and we are all going to attend a real, live, in-person worship service together for Easter Sunday, followed by Easter dinner with my mom.  I'm so excited; it's like seeing the light at the end of a very long, dark tunnel ...

Economy Block and a Flower Tutorial!! from Bee In My Bonnet

I have always loved this
traditional quilt block.
It has several names but the
most common and oldest name that
I know for it is called the
Traditionally it has always been
 fairly simple to construct...
but the down side is that
because all of the angles are on a bias
it is super hard to have made the
 block accurate when
piecing the traditional way.

So when I was given the opportunity to
 design foundation paper piecing blocks
 for It's Sew Emma...
I jumped on it right away
and the first block that I chose
 was ...

Christmas Economy Blocks from Carried Away Quilting

I got a little sidetracked this weekend, quilting friends.  I had fully intended to organize the scrap baskets and shelves in my fabric closet. Unfortunately, I was easily distracted by a bin of festive Sweetwater Christmas prints I had saved from past projects. So instead of organizing, I found myself cutting and sewing. Before I knew it, I had made four holiday Economy Blocks to share with you.

Just in case you missed my most recent posts, I’ve provided a detailed tutorial on making these 4 1/2” Economy Blocks from your stash. Let me warn you though, you ...

Economy Block tutorial from Carried Away Quilting

Recently I shared my Vintage Halloween Economy Blocks on the blog, and I promised you there would be a tutorial. So today I’ll be sharing some information on how I made my blocks, including tools, tips, measurements and basic assembly instructions. This post is not a pattern for a full quilt, so there will not be fabric requirements. But the great thing about the Economy Block is that it fun, easy and a great way to use up your scraps and stash. Let’s get started!

Vintage Halloween Economy Block
Size:
4 1/2” (unfinished);  4” (finished / when sewn ...

Vintage Halloween Economy Blocks from Carried Away Quilting

I have a weakness for vintage inspired children’s fabrics. They remind me of my favorite children’s books . . . tender stories of sweet boys and girls finding adventures in their everyday lives, learning lessons of kindness, honesty, resilience and even bravery. Every illustration was a small work of art, inviting me to another place and time. It’s no wonder that I couldn’t resist this darling Halloween themed fabric with a vintage vibe.

The focal fabric you see at the center of my blocks is from a Halloween collection by Belle and Boo, which is a company based in ...

Freedom from Sewn With Curves

How the year has flown by. I didn't believe adults when I was younger telling me that time just flies by as you get older but I am a believer. Now that I am 40, I can only imagine how quickly things will happen. Fingers crossed that I am ready for it.

I lost my sewing mojo for a while, hence the lack of posts in recent months. This was the first time in years that I didn't sew everyone's Christmas presents. I have decided to not put any stress on myself for any reason to finish ...
