What Are Quilters Blogging About Today?

Patchwork was born out of necessity and frugality using bits and pieces of old clothing and scraps to produce an item of warmth.  There are some wonderful books that document the history of quiltmaking from the beginning to our current large industry that supports the creative aspect of the fiber arts.  One of my favorites about the history is  "The American Quilt, a History of Cloth and Comfort  1750-1950" by Roderick Kiracofe.

During the Covid isolation I didn't just sit around doing nothing.  Well, actually I did for the first six or seven months.  Once I came out of my funk I did get into my sewing room.  I managed to make several charity quilts for Project Linus to be donated through my guild, the Rocket City Modern Quilt Guild.

I finished piecing the sea swept cornerstone blocks at Friday quilt group.

And then I counted them - sigh, I am 6 short. hmm- maybe I had the steps backward. haha

But, they are beautiful and I am so pleased.

Sue is back to Friday group after covid. We have missed her.

and I gave Linda her quilt back after quilting it. It was a beauty.

This seems like a small accomplishment for my sea swept quilt, but, I have made a decision to cut new blocks for the sashings and trim down to the right size. These 2 blocks were made using the exact measurements. They are not bad but a little small. I need 56 of these blocks for the quilt I am making.

It was fun to turn the scraps into a top.

But even more fun to turn the top into a finish. And use more of the prepared scrappy bindings Sparkle Jane and I created and set aside.

Even small finishes are so satisfying. This adds to my growing stack of baby quilts to be gifted or donated by the end of the year.

Using THIS TUTORIAL and the the last of the leftover jelly roll scraps that created the coin quilts, I made this baby quilt top.

It was fun to add scraps to make it work. The light blue solid doesn’t show quite the right color here. It looks better in person.

 Good morning!  Happy Passover to my Jewish friends, Happy Holy Week to my Christian friends, and Happy Spring to one and all!  In my house, my younger son has a half day of remote learning today and then he is off for a week of Spring break.  My older son is coming home from college tomorrow afternoon, and we are all going to attend a real, live, in-person worship service together for Easter Sunday, followed by Easter dinner with my mom.  I'm so excited; it's like seeing the light at the end of a very long, dark tunnel ...

I got a little sidetracked this weekend, quilting friends.  I had fully intended to organize the scrap baskets and shelves in my fabric closet. Unfortunately, I was easily distracted by a bin of festive Sweetwater Christmas prints I had saved from past projects. So instead of organizing, I found myself cutting and sewing. Recently I shared my Vintage Halloween Economy Blocks on the blog, and I promised you there would be a tutorial. So today I’ll be sharing some information on how I made my blocks, including tools, tips, measurements and basic assembly instructions. This post is not a pattern for a full quilt, so there will not be fabric requirements.
